Justice for All

In the United States, 80% of low-income individuals and 40-60% of middle-income individuals face legal problems without a lawyer. The justice gap is enormous: millions of people navigate evictions, custody disputes, debt collection, and immigration proceedings alone because they cannot afford legal representation. AI is beginning to close this gap. DoNotPay, the 'robot lawyer,' has helped over 2 million users contest parking tickets, cancel subscriptions, and fight bank fees. Suffolk University's Legal Innovation and Technology Lab built AI tools that help self-represented litigants fill out court forms correctly, a process that previously required hiring a lawyer or risking dismissal for procedural errors. In the UK, AI chatbots guide domestic violence survivors through the process of obtaining protective orders. These tools do not replace lawyers; they provide basic legal guidance to people who would otherwise have none at all.
