Users Break Everything
2 min
What's the most important thing to do when users find unexpected bugs?
A developer built a recipe generator app and asked five friends to test it. Within ten minutes: one person entered a recipe request in emoji only. Another asked for "a recipe that takes negative five minutes." Someone pasted an entire novel into the ingredients field. One person found that asking for "a recipe for water" caused the AI to write a 2,000-word philosophical essay about hydration. And the last tester discovered the app would happily generate recipes combining bleach and sugar if you asked nicely.
Every single one of these was a surprise. The developer had tested the app with sensible inputs and it worked perfectly. Real users are creative, unpredictable, and excellent at finding problems you never imagined. That's why user testing isn't optional. It's where you learn what your product actually needs.
